Lilipad, a grassroots organization that supports girls in care institutions, will open its sixth Moroccan creative library at the Girls’ Protection Center in Meknès by the end of the year.
Founded in Berlin in 2017 by a Moroccan national, Lilipad has established 19 libraries in four countries, including Germany, where it works with refugee children, and Morocco, where it operates inside girls’ care centers.
Five creative libraries are already running in Casablanca, Mohammedia, Marrakech-Aït Ourir, and Agadir.
The libraries provide spaces where girls can write, read, create art, and share their stories. Many of the girls have faced separation, poverty, or involvement with the justice system.
While most institutions meet their basic needs and provide schooling or vocational training, Lilipad focuses on creative and emotional development, which it says is crucial for rebuilding confidence and helping the girls become independent.
“These young girls carry heavy stories but also exceptional talents. Creativity is their language to rebuild themselves, to regain confidence, and to believe once again in their future,” said Sara Arsalan, founder of Lilipad.
The organization operates on a grassroots model built around three main elements: small multilingual libraries designed as creative spaces, dedicated librarians who support the girls daily, and partnerships with local artists and associations.
In January 2025, Lilipad secured official recognition from Morocco’s Ministry of Youth through a formal partnership, confirming its role as a trusted grassroots actor.
Looking ahead, the group is preparing a national advocacy initiative to promote creativity as a pillar of social support. Its highlight will be a national exhibition in February 2026, showcasing the voices and artistic creations of the girls.
