lilipad librarians

The people who bring lilipad libraries to life.

WHY THIS WORK MATTERS

Libraries are more than shelves of books. They are living spaces shaped by the people who manage and care for the space, and welcome the children who spend time in them. lilipad librarians create continuity, trust, and a sense of familiarity in the spaces children return to week after week.

In many of the places where lilipad works, such as refugee accommodations, youth centres, orphanages, community centres, children often experience constant change. Staff rotate, families move, and their support systems shift. Community librarians offer continuity - something rare and very much needed in circumstances such as these. Someone who returns regularly, remembers children’s names, and reads with them, truly helps shape the everyday life of the library.

Their impact goes beyond teaching children to read or improving their literary levels. Over time, their consistent presence transforms the library from simply a room with books into a place where children feel comfortable, recognised, and able to explore stories in their own way.

OUR APPROACH

Community-rooted

lilipad works with librarians and facilitators who often come from the communities we serve.

Their language, cultural knowledge, and lived experience help create environments where children feel understood and at ease.

Consistent Presence

Libraries open regularly with a familiar adult present. Children know when they can come and who will be there.

Consistency helps build trust and makes the library part of everyday life.

Everyday Engagement

Librarians read with children one-on-one or in small groups, help them choose books, and encourage informal creative activities like drawing or storytelling.

Children’s curiosity shapes what happens in the space.

Learning Together

Librarians are supported through guidance, peer exchange, and reflection so the practice continues to grow while remaining responsive to each community.

TESTIMONIALS

Hear directly from our librarians and participants:

I didn’t know I could write a song. When we recorded it, I felt proud.

Age 11

The library is a crucial space for children who have not yet been granted access to school. Through workshops, they build skills before entering the classroom.

What this looks like in practice

lilipad librarians shape the everyday life of the library in ways that reflect the needs and rhythms of each community.

Some are part of long-term library programming. Others are special collaborations or festival moments. Each project reflects the children and community it serves.
