The Lilipad initiative was launched in 2017 by a young Moroccan woman living in Berlin, transforming a simple idea into a project that now spans four countries and includes 19 creative libraries. In Morocco, the association has established six libraries within child protection centers, the latest of which will soon open in the city of Meknes.
Lilipad is not just a library, but a vibrant space for reading, writing, and creativity. Within these spaces, girls write stories and poems, paint pictures, and create artwork; their voices often remain unheard outside the walls of these centers.
Libraries brimming with hope and creativity
The initiative focuses on the cultural and emotional dimension of the journey of girls who arrive at the centers after difficult family experiences, such as separation, abandonment, or vulnerability related to the judiciary.
Lilipad libraries go beyond books; they are vibrant spaces for reading, writing, creativity, and sharing, and they form a stable and encouraging reference for girls amidst a life often marked by fragility, according to the initiative’s statement.
The association established six libraries within child protection centers, the last of which was in the city of Meknes at the end of August 2025.
The initiative focuses, according to its statement, on the cultural and emotional dimensions of the journeys of girls who arrive at the centers after difficult family experiences, such as separation, abandonment, or vulnerability related to the legal system. Through creative activities, these girls are given the opportunity to rebuild self-confidence, discover their talents, and prepare for an independent and balanced future within society.
“These girls carry heavy stories, but they also possess exceptional talents. Creativity is their language for rebuilding and fostering new confidence in their future.”
Arslan adds, “These girls carry heavy burdens, but they also possess exceptional talents. Creativity is their language for rebuilding and fostering a newfound confidence in their future.” She explains, “The library is usually run by a dedicated librarian who is close to the girls, making the reading space a safe haven that encourages exploration and creativity.”
In addition, the initiative works through partnerships with local artists and associations to highlight the creativity of girls and amplify their voices.
“Lilipad seeks to provide essential support for rebuilding, boosting self-confidence and empowering girls, so that they eventually become independent, balanced and active adults in society,” the initiative’s statement adds.
In January 2025, Lilipad received official recognition from the Moroccan Ministry of Youth, solidifying its position as a trusted grassroots organization. By February 2026, the association was preparing to organize a national exhibition, giving the girls a platform to showcase their art and creativity to a wider audience.
In this way, Lilipad libraries are transformed from mere bookshelves into vibrant hubs of creativity and hope, where new opportunities arise for girls on the path to building a brighter future.
